Signs that Your Roof Needs to be Replaced

The harsh Minnesota winter has finally come to a close and the first signs of spring are beginning to show. The snow has melted off of your roof and it is now time to check for roof damage. We’ve rounded up a list of telltale signs that indicate the need to get a new roof.

Missing or Decayed Shingles

If the snow, wind, or rain caused only one shingle to curve or decay, there’s no need to replace your whole roof; just replace the one problematic shingle. However, if there are a lot of missing shingles on your roof, then it is a good idea to get your entire roof replaced.

Issues with the Drip Edge

If your drip edge has been damaged or has fallen off, this could cause additional wear and tear to your roof. This added wear to your current roof could lead to the need for a new roof. Inspect your drip edge, carefully looking for signs of rust or damage.

Water Stains

If there are water stains on your ceiling inside of your house, then these stains could be an indication of a roof leak. Once you find a water stain, it is important to get your roof replaced before more water damage occurs.

Shingle Fragments in the Gutters

Check your gutters to see if they are filled up with shingle fragments. If there are a lot of shingle fragments in your gutters, this could be a sign that your roof is at the end of its life and has started to lose more shingle granules than usual.

Roof Valley

A roof valley is an area where two sloping parts of your roof meet each other. After a wet winter, snow and rain can sometimes flow through these roof valleys and cause roof leaks. These leaks occur when the metal flashing that encompasses the valley fails to protect your roof.

Moss

Moss can trap moisture against your roof and this excess moisture can lead to roof leaks. If the moss hasn’t been on your roof for long and hasn’t caused any leaks, it can be easily removed. However, if the moss has been on your roof for a while and if it is the source to one or more roof leaks, it is time to get a new roof.

Are you missing roof shingles, finding water stains on your ceilings, or discovering shingle granules in your gutters? If you are having these problems with your current roof, then it may be time to get your roof replaced!
