Is it Time to Replace Your Roof?
Winter can be hard on a house. From ice dams to dirty siding to window condensation, snow, ice, wind and mud can create a variety of potential issues. As you go outside to see what winter left behind, don’t forget to look up. It may be time to replace your roof – but it can be difficult to know when you’re at that point. Here are a few things to look for.

Is it Time to Replace Your Roof? Here’s What to Look For.
Damaged or Missing Shingles
One or two missing or damaged shingles isn’t cause for concern. But if a large number of shingles are curved, decayed or missing, that’s a sign that the roof needs to be replaced.
Drip Edge Issues
If the drip edge has rust or damage – or is missing entirely – the roof is likely to suffer additional wear and tear.
Water or Light Leakage
Water stains on interior ceilings are a good indicator of significant roof issues. Similarly, if you notice light coming in through the attic ceiling, the roof is likely to have damage.
Roof Valley
A roof valley is the place on your roof where two slopes meet. During a storm, or when snow melts quickly, water can flow heavily through the roof valley. Sometimes, the metal flashing in that area fails to protect the roof from leaks. The flashing may need to be replaced, or you may need to replace your roof entirely.
Moss or Algae
On its own, moss or algae on the roof doesn’t mean there are any major issues. If you notice algae, clean it before it turns to moss, and there shouldn’t be any major damage. If algae has been on your roof for long enough to turn to moss, you’re more likely to see damage. This is because moss traps moisture, which can lead to leaks.
Fragments or Granules in Gutters
Have you noticed shingle fragments or granules in your gutters, on the roof or in the yard? Depending on the severity, this may indicate that it’s time to replace your roof.
Increased Energy Costs
Compare your year-over-year heating and cooling costs. Have your monthly average costs increased with no other explanation? A faulty roof may be to blame.
