How to Choose New Gutters
Most of us don’t think about our gutters very often – until we have to. Gutters play a huge role in water drainage, so if they become clogged or worn out, there could be significant damage to your roof, foundation, and the interior of your home.
If it’s time to replace your gutters, here are a few things to consider.
Gutter Glossary
Here are a few of the most common terms you’ll encounter when shopping for a new gutter system.
Gutter: captures water as it flows off the roof
End cap: closes the end of the gutter
Fascia bracket: secures gutter to eaves
Downspout: carries water to the ground
Downspout bracket: attaches downspout to the house
Elbow: changes angle of downspout to direct water away from house
How to Know When It’s Time to Replace Your Roof
What Type of Gutters Should You Choose?
Gutters are available in a variety of materials, such as vinyl, metal, and wood. In general, metal strikes the best balance between affordability and durability, so it’s a good choice for most homeowners.
Once you decide on metal, you’ll have to choose the specific type. Aluminum will be the most affordable, followed by coated steel, zinc and copper.
Aluminum gutters come in a wide array of colors and weights. Heavyweight aluminum will last about 25 years, while lighter weights are more prone to bending and denting, and may need replacement sooner.
Steel gutters are coated in zinc or a zinc-aluminum alloy, or blended with chrome to make stainless steel. This helps to avoid rust. However, rust will occur between 8-15 years on zinc-coated gutters.
Zinc gutters are rustproof and durable, and they weather to an aesthetically pleasing matte gray. They last between 30 and 50 years, depending on proximity to saltwater (so Minnesotans can expect a longer life expectancy).
Copper gutters have the longest lifespan – 100 years or more. They will oxidize to matte brown, and eventually blue-green. They are also the most expensive option.
Other Options to Consider
When choosing gutters, you’ll also have to decide:
What shape to choose
Whether to add leaf guards or debris filters
How and where to mount them to your home
If you want any decorative accessories
You will also have to perform regular maintenance to ensure that your gutters perform well and last as long as possible.
