How to Get Your Roof Ready for Winter
With winter on the horizon, now is the time to get your home ready for the snow, ice, and wind. After all, in Minnesota, we never know when the snow will fly – do we need to mention the 1991 Halloween blizzard? – and you certainly don’t want to be cleaning out the gutters during a snowstorm! Here are a few things you should do now to get your roof ready for winter.
Three Tasks to Get Your Roof Ready for Winter
1. Inspect the Roof
Regular roof inspections will help uncover potential issues before they cause major damage. We recommend inspecting your roof at least twice per year – once in the fall and once in spring. Also, it’s a good idea to hire an expert to inspect the roof instead of attempting to do it yourself. Learn why here: Why You Should Hire an Expert to Inspect Your Roof
2. Clean the Gutters
When gutters become clogged with leaves, sticks, and debris, water is unable to drain correctly. This becomes especially dangerous in the winter, when clogged gutters can cause ice dams and damage from snow and ice. Make sure to clean all those falling leaves out of gutters before the snow flies.

3. Trim the Trees
When snow piles onto weak or broken branches, they’re more likely to snap. Trim branches that are broken or hanging over your house to avoid any major damage. This will also reduce the amount of debris you have to clean out of gutters – a true win-win!
