Should You Repair or Replace?
Whether your home is brand new or several decades old, there will come a point when you need to decide whether to repair or replace flooring, fixtures, doors, and more. But it can be difficult to know which is the right choice.
There are a lot of factors to consider when deciding whether to repair or replace. We’ll share a few, courtesy of This Old House, below. And if you have any questions about your specific project, give The Chuba Company a call for a free consultation and quote!
How to Know Whether to Repair or Replace
Windows: Heat loss and gain through windows is responsible for up to 30% of a home’s heating and cooling energy use. If your windows are leaky, ask a professional to repair sash damage, insulate weight pockets, and add new weatherstripping. You can also add a storm window for extra efficiency. If those steps won’t fix the problem, it may be time for new windows.
Doors: If you feel a chill near the perimeter of your front door, replace the weatherstripping. For cosmetic concerns, try a new coat of paint or a new knob. However, if the door is warped and no longer fits tightly in the frame, it’s time to replace.
Floors: Hardwood floors generally last for a long time – 100 years or more. They get dull and dinged up over time, but it’s fairly easy to clean, sand and refinish them. However, if boards are thin, rotted or otherwise beyond repair, a new floor might be necessary.
Tile: When grout or caulk starts to look dingy, it can be cleaned, painted or replaced. However, if you’re seeing extensive mold, this may be a sign of a deeper issue that requires mold abatement and new tile.
