How to Turn Your Backyard into a Retreat

From grilling and eating to simply relaxing in the sun, spring is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy your backyard, deck or porch. This is especially true now, as shelter-in-place orders have us spending more time at home.

Turn your backyard into a more comfortable living space with these tips from Better Homes & Gardens.

Focus on Comfort and Durability

Outdoor furniture must be able to withstand the elements, but it should also be comfortable. Look for sturdy, weatherproof furniture, and add comfort with cushions and pillows in durable fabrics. Don’t forget blankets for chilly nights!

Boost Privacy

No matter how much you like your neighbors, you probably don’t want them seeing and hearing your every conversation. A trellis or pergola is a great way to block outside views in an attractive, unobtrusive way.

Create Shade

You won’t be able to truly enjoy your backyard without a little shelter from the sun. Use umbrellas, retractable awnings, pergolas or even trees to add shade to your outdoor space.

Add Lighting

At a minimum, you should have lights that illuminate a path back to the house. But lighting can do so much more. Consider adding string lights or Edison bulbs for ambience, and solar lights to highlight landscaping. Place lights both high and low for an even effect.
