Focus on Comfort and Durability

Outdoor furniture must be able to withstand the elements, but it should also be comfortable. Look for sturdy, weatherproof furniture, and add comfort with cushions and pillows in durable fabrics. Don’t forget blankets for chilly nights!

Boost Privacy

No matter how much you like your neighbors, you probably don’t want them seeing and hearing your every conversation. A trellis or pergola is a great way to block outside views in an attractive, unobtrusive way.

Create Shade

You won’t be able to truly enjoy your backyard without a little shelter from the sun. Use umbrellas, retractable awnings, pergolas or even trees to add shade to your outdoor space.

Add Lighting

At a minimum, you should have lights that illuminate a path back to the house. But lighting can do so much more. Consider adding string lights or Edison bulbs for ambience, and solar lights to highlight landscaping. Place lights both high and low for an even effect.

How to Clean a Deck

If winter left your deck in rough shape, here are a few tips to get it clean and ready to use:

  • Sweep: Sweep all debris off the deck, paying close attention to the spaces between boards. Use a putty knife to clean any crevices.
  • Scrub: Clean the surface of the wood, using deck cleaner or a 1:1 mix of bleach and warm water. A pressure washer may also come in handy for large or particularly dirty areas.
  • Stain: Apply a stain or waterproofing deck sealer.
