A cabin is more than a vacation home. It’s the place where your family spends time and makes memories together. But as years pass, many cabin owners find that they need more space or a different layout to fit the family’s new needs. This doesn’t mean you need to buy a new cabin! Often, a cabin remodel is a more cost-effective choice, while allowing you to customize your space to fit your family, now and in the future.

Where should you begin when planning a cabin remodel? We have a few tips.
Plan
Think about how your family will use the cabin in the next five, ten and 20 years. Will you need additional space for grandchildren? Will aging parents need bedrooms and bathrooms on the main level? How can the living spaces be upgraded to meet your family’s needs, now and in the future?
Scope
Determine the scope of the project. Are you doing a basic remodel, and keeping the footprint of the home intact? Will you be removing walls or other structural elements? Do you want to add space in the form of an addition? Or will you be tearing the existing structure down and starting from scratch?
Hire
In a cabin remodel, it’s especially important to hire a contractor that you fully trust with your vision. This is because you will likely be off-site for much of the project, and unable to check in on its progress. Research local contractors, read reviews, and ask for recommendations from neighbors. Make sure to ask these important questions before hiring a contractor, and look over your contract closely.
Budget
Determine how much you’re able to spend, and make sure all aspects of your remodel fit within that number. Leave some wiggle room for contingencies and unexpected costs. Then discuss the budget with your remodeling team to ensure that the numbers are reasonable.
Decide
Make any necessary decisions on materials, floor plans, finishes and more. This is when the budget will be finalized as well.
Communicate
Determine how and when you will communicate with your remodeling team. Remain available to handle any issues that come up.
