Your floors put up with a lot of abuse. Between daily use, kids, pets and parties, your carpet may be looking a little worse for wear. Before reaching for harsh chemical cleaners and expensive machines, try this simple, eco-friendly cleaning solution from DIY Natural:

How to Clean Carpet Naturally With Homemade Carpet Cleaner

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil, or another clear essential oil of choice (optional)

Directions

  1. Combine vinegar and water in a large spray bottle.
  2. Add in salt and lavender or other essential oil (optional).
  3. Cap and shake the bottle.
  4. Spray on carpets liberally, shaking the bottle frequently between sprays.
  5. Allow carpets to dry completely.
  6. Vacuum treated areas.

How it works:

White vinegar is tough on stains and is ideal for deodorizing. Mixing the vinegar with the water dilutes it enough to be safe for use on carpeting. Next, the salt helps bind up stain. If you have an extra-stubborn stain, you can pour salt directly on the stain and leave for ten to fifteen minutes before scrubbing and vacuuming. The essential oil lends some additional deodorizing properties to the cleaning solution, and leaves a more pleasant smell behind. Lavender is an ideal choice because it’s safe for pets and children. Make sure to research the risks of other essential oils before you substitute.

Now your carpets will be looking fresh again, without adding any harsh chemicals to your home’s air and surfaces.
