Your floors put up with a lot of abuse – between daily use, kids, pets and parties your carpets may be looking a little worse for wear. Before reaching for harsh chemicals and expensive machines, try this eco-friendly cleaning solution from DIY Natural:

How to Clean Carpet Naturally With Homemade Carpet Cleaner

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil, or another clear essential oil of choice

  1. Combine vinegar and water in a large spray bottle.
  2. Add in salt and lavender essential oil.
  3. Cap and shake.
  4. Spray on carpets liberally, shaking bottle frequently between sprays.
  5. Allow carpets to dry.
  6. Vacuum treated areas.

How it works: White vinegar is tough on stains and is ideal for deodorizing. Mixing vinegar with the water dilutes it enough to be safe for use on carpeting. Next, the salt helps bind up stain. If you have an extra-stubborn stain, you can pour salt directly on the stain and leave for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing and vacuuming. The essential oil lends some more deodorizing properties and leaves a more pleasant smell behind. Lavender is ideal because it’s safe for pets and children.

Now your carpets will be looking fresh again, without any added harsh chemicals. Interested in more green living? Check out our green construction solutions and how we’re committed to creating high-performing homes with environmentally friendly building materials
