The Advantages of a Small Kitchen

Smaller kitchens are more ergonomically efficient, and allow you to move more easily between the stove, refrigerator and sink. When it comes time to remodel, you’ll need to purchase fewer cabinets and materials, and smaller appliances. This lowers the cost – or allows you to use higher-end materials, if the budget allows.

Small Kitchen Remodeling Tips

Here are a few things to consider when planning your small kitchen remodel.

Choose the Right Floor Plan

The best floor plans for small kitchens are:

  • One-wall: with counters, cabinets and appliances all on one wall
  • Galley/corridor: parallel walls of counters, cabinets and appliances
  • L-shaped: two counters arranged at 90 degrees to each other

Be Smart with Your Space

Every inch counts when you’re working with a small footprint. You may have to choose smaller appliances, sinks and storage spaces in order to preserve counter space and layout.

Prioritize

Before making those decisions, determine what’s most important to you. Do you want more storage? More prep room? A bigger refrigerator? Once you have your priorities established, you can work around them.

Maximize Depth and Height

Again, the goal is to utilize every inch of a small kitchen. Choose cabinets that go to the ceilings, and install smart storage options (such as roll-out shelves and lazy susans) that allow you to use every inch of cabinet space.

Choose Light Colors and Large Floor Tiles

Use light or neutral colors and wood tones for cabinets, counters and walls to make your small kitchen look and feel much bigger!
