Your hardwood floors may look clean, but are they really? From dirt to food to pet debris, floors accumulate a wide variety of harmful and illness-causing substances. Even if you sweep your floors often, the constant foot traffic pushes the dirt and debris down into the floor finish and between the boards.
So what’s the best way to deep clean hardwood floors? We turned to the experts at This Old House to find out.
1. Maintain Clean Floors
Whether you prefer to sweep or vacuum, do it often. Use an angled, soft-bristled broom that will allow you to get into corners, always sweeping with the grain. Or, vacuum with a soft floor nozzle. If something wet or sticky gets on the floor, clean with a damp cloth and a small amount of wood floor cleaner. A microfiber mop head will help keep the floor clean of dust and pet hair.
2. Get a Deeper Clean
When floors begin to look dingy, use a damp, flat-head mop with a microfiber pad. Moving with the grain, use a spray bottle to spray about a half teaspoon of wood floor cleaner for every two square feet. No need to rinse or buff!
3. Use the Right Product
It may seem like a good idea to DIY floor cleaner, but if your solution doesn’t have the right pH, it can damage or dull the polyurethane coating. It’s best to use a cleaning solution with a pH level of about 7. If you use prepared floor wipes, make sure they’re formulated for hardwood floors.
