Addition Alternatives to Make Your Space Function

Over the last two years, home has become the place where we work, exercise, learn, shop, and explore. As a result, many of us are finding that we need more from our homes. Not necessarily more space, but space that functions as we need it to. If you’re in this situation – your home isn’t meeting your needs, but you can’t or don’t want to add on – these creative addition alternatives could solve your problem.

According to HGTV, there are many benefits to reconfiguring existing square footage instead of adding on. First, it’s less expensive. Second, it won’t add heating, cooling, and other costs. Finally, it may simply be easier! But it’ll take some creativity.

Reconfigure Your Space with Addition Alternatives

Finish Unused Space

An unfinished attic or basement is the easiest and most cost-effective place to add a room. Both are ideal locations for family rooms, playrooms, home offices, home gyms, or a similar space. Just make sure there is enough headroom and staircase access.

Maximize Underutilized Spaces

Do you really need that guest room, formal dining room or hall closet? Could those spaces be converted to better meet your needs, or made into multi-purpose rooms? For example, downsize your desk to make room for exercise equipment. Instead of a guest bed, look for a convertible sofa sleeper or a murphy bed.

Remove Walls

Knocking down an interior wall won’t make your home bigger, but it will certainly feel bigger. You may have to add support beams and patch floors or ceilings, but the end result will be a larger multi-purpose space – and better functionality for what you need.

Reconfigure for Efficiency

Is an HVAC vent, closet or stairway blocking your room’s functionality? Move it! This relatively simple change can give you the space to design a room that meets your needs.
