4 Tips For Winter Home Maintenance in Minnesota

Every homeowner knows that it’s important to regularly maintain their investment to ensure they have a comfortable place to live. There are certain things that are not only necessary, but also best to do during the winter.

Scrape the snow off your roof

Here in Minnesota, we tend to have several months of heavy snowfall. Whether a large amount of snow accumulates over several storms or during one big one, it’s important to scrape the bottom 3-4 feet off your roof with a roof rake. This prevents 2 destructive things from happening:

  • Ice Dams – Puts strain on your roof, gutters, and prevents water from flowing off your roof properly.
  • Collapsing roof – There’s nothing more destructive than that!

Condensation on windows

If you’re getting a lot of moisture on your windows, it means you have too much humidity in your home. While increasing humidity may be tempting during our dry winter months, too much can cause condensation, mold or damage to your structure’s materials. If you have more than 30 – 35% humidity in your home, consider getting a dehumidifier.

Furnace maintenance

When was the last time you cleaned your furnace filter? You’ll get the most efficiency out of your furnace if you clean its filter at least once a month this time of year.

Screen repair

Since it’s not likely you’ll need your screens during the winter months, now is a great time to get them repaired. Loose seams, holes, and tears are all great projects to work on during the winter.

Are you wondering when you’re going to find the time to work on all of this home maintenance? Between the holidays, busy school schedules, or simply not having the desire to do it yourself, it may be time to think about hiring someone.
