R-Value & U-Value
Window units have both an R-Value and a U-Value. R-Value indicates the window insulation’s resistance to heat flow, the higher the R-Value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. The more important factor in determining which window is right for your home is the U-Value. The U-Value indicates the energy value of the whole window unit, not just the glass and measures how the entire window component performs. The lower the U-value, the better the insulation. In colder climates, like Minnesota, a U-Value of .30 in windows is recommended. Windows with a U-Value of .30 have at least double-glazing and low-e coating.
